Ykee Benda

The past two weeks have been pressure filled ones for singer Ykee Benda with media and fans questioning when the singer will be travelling to Russia to perform at the opening ceremony of the World Cup. The singer was part of the World Cup anthem so it was expected he would feature on the live performance. However, there was no slightest sign Ykee was travelling to Russia, starting a rumor.

Ykee Benda this morning through a video on his Social Media platforms informed all Ugandans that he had never been contacted to perform at the World Cup and that it was a speculation from Ugandans. “I have never mentioned to anyone that I was going to perform at the World Cup. Ugandans started the rumor and I played a long” he said.

Ykee Benda was slated to be the second ever Ugandan artiste to grace a live performance at the World Cup after Jose Chameleone who performed in South Africa in 2010.

Airtel Uganda M.D joins the Katikkiro of Buganda Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga and other sponsors to launch the Airtel Masaza Cup.

Airtel Uganda M.D V.G. Somasekhar(C) joins the Katikkiro of Buganda Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga (2R) and other sponsors to launch the 2018 Airtel Masaza Cup.

For the 2nd consecutive year, Airtel Uganda has once again joined the Buganda Kingdom to launch the Masaza Cup tournament at a press conference held at the Buganda Kingdom offices in Bulange, Mengo as the platinum sponsors.

In attendance were Airtel Uganda officials led by the Managing Director Mr. V.G. Somasekhar and Buganda Kingdom officials led by Katikkiro Owek. Charles Peter Mayigga, who represented the Kabaka of Buganda, and the Sports Minister Owek. Henry Sekabembe.

The Masaza Cup is an annual Buganda Kingdom tournament that has been played since 2004 and usually features 19 teams from 19 different Buganda Kingdom regions. Last year, Gomba defeated Ssingo to emerge champion – a well-deserved win after losing to Buddu in the 2016 finals.

“We are proud to once again come together with this prestigious Kingdom to launch this tournament. Our commitment to Ugandan sports is highlighted by our involvement in football at every level right from the grass root with our Airtel Rising Stars tournament to supporting the National team-the Uganda Cranes,” commented Somasekhar.

“Football unites individuals and societies, develops communities and teaches the values of team work to achieve a common goal. There are no better qualities to instill in the youth today and I would like to congratulate the Buganda Kingdom for this initiative,” he added.

The Katikkiro of Buganda Owek. Charles Peter Mayigga thanked Airtel Uganda for their support of Buganda kingdom activities.

“Airtel is no stranger to this Kingdom. We have worked together in the past on a number of projects and I believe we shall continue this relationship in the future. This tournament boosts talent and creates unity and I encourage everyone to participate either as a player or as fan,” he commented.

He also noted that this year, the Kabaka will grace the opening game on Saturday 23rd June in Gomba district and the finals which will be played at Namboole Stadium in August this year.

Jazz Safari donates to Kampala school of handicappedThe Johnnie Walker Jazz Safari doesn’t happen until June 30, but its most beautiful tunes already rent the air at the Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped. Selected as the beneficiary of the annual jazz event’s charity initiative for this year, the school has had specialised equipment set up to help supplement the learning efforts and skills of the school’s disabled pupils.

Charity initiatives of this nature have been a feature of the Jazz Safari since 2011, with support rendered to different causes through the Rotary Clubs of Uganda. And the latest beneficiary of this helping hand is the Balintuma Road-based school, which during the ongoing second term received equipment valued at £50,000 (about Shs250m). The equipment was obtained through friends and a partnership with Disc Manufacturing Services, a new specialist ICT center based in England.

“Our partnership has been flourishing and we look forward to reaching as far as taking up staff welfare at the school for the next five years with an annual donation of £2,500. Renovations are ongoing at the school as well,” said Tshaka Mayanja, the Jazz Safari founder.

The Jazz Safari has also championed causes in projects such as farming in Ssese Islands under Rotary Kampala-Ssese Club. For several years they have also worked with the Rotary Clubs Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital, dedicating a ward named after the late Maureen Mugoya; The Maureen Mugoya Breast Cancer Ward.

The Johnnie Walker Jazz Safari whose eleventh edition is set for June 30, will have legendary bassist and vocalist Richard Bona performing at the annual event which this year switches venue to Speke Resort Muyonyo lakeside.

As part of the Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) celebration, the French NGO Voices Without Borders (Voix Sans Frontères – VSF) together with Children of Peace Uganda and Alliance Française Kampala are organising a children’s concert slated for this evening(June 14) at the French School. In honor of the youth, Eddy Kenzo will grace the stage with the Ghetto Kids to close the night. The event will also feature a performance from Giovanni Kiyingi Kremer.

Voices Without Borders (VSF) and Children of Peace Uganda is a project focused on using music as a tool of repair and resilience for the children and adolescent escapees in the Bidi-Bidi camp-Uganda and former LRA abductees in northern Uganda’s district of Lira.

Singing is a way of enabling the youth to find joy and the energy to surmount the trauma and shock of exile and displacement. VSF believes in the power of the song to repair and enhance resilience. Song liberates the person to find what is essential, to feel that one inhabits the body despite the wounds and traumas. To learn to breathe for song is to exist in a different way. Song can be the process to self-repair and resilience.

As Boris Cyrulnik said, ‘resilience is a means for the body to resist pressure, and regain the former self. This is both physical and psychological. Psychologically, resilience is the capacity to live and succeed despite adversity.’

VSF seeks to establish a practice of choir song thereby enabling the youth to find joy and the energy to surmount the trauma and shock of exile and displacement.

Eddy Kenzo has been invited to this concert in recognition of his use of music as a tool to uplift the ghetto children in Uganda.

Cameroon Gitawo with his son Chris Junior

Parenting is no easy job. It even gets harder when you are in the spotlight because with fame comes public scrutiny. It is thus no surprise that celebrities have often been judged harshly in the court of public opinion for raising spoiled kids.

Well, it seems the story might go differently for socialite Cameroon Gitawo. The South Africa based Ugandan socialite seems determined to accomplish the herculean task of raising a well-disciplined son amid temptations of his lavish lifestyle.

This comes after he opened up about his parenting goals on social media. In a social media post, where he is seen hanging out with his son, Chris Junior, in the backyard of his home in Sandton, Johannesburg, he revealed that he is grooming his son to be a responsible member of society. “My mission is to make my son a well groomed dude,” he noted.

Can he accomplish this? Only time will tell.

Revelers turn up in big numbers for DJ Nimrod’s All White Singles Beach Party

DJ Nimrod's All White Beach Party.

By Our Reporter

If you didn’t know who DJ Nimrod is, then Spenah Beach Entebbe was a good place to find out. Why you ask? It takes an established brand to pull off the massive crowd that Galaxy FM’s Deejay Nimrod gathered for his All White  Singles Beach Party. With support from Uganda Waragi, DJ Nimrod (real name Nimrod Nabeeta) held his biggest and best beach party since he took the chance four years ago. Young and old, the beach front was dotted with revellers in various fashions of white. From young boys and girls trying to make a fashion statement to the men and women making a splash in the dirty algae filled lake water, everyone was having fun in their own way.

The party attracted some of the best artistes and singers on the scene today including Fefe Busi, Fik Fameica, Spice Diana, Lydia Jasmine, Bebe Cool, Chance Nalubega.

When Fefe Busi stepped on the stage, the crowd’s massive welcome confirms without a doubt that he is well on his way to stardom on Uganda’s hip hop scene if he maintains his flow, relevance and consistence. Not only has he woken up the once sleepy hip hop genre, Fefe Busi has also redefined crowd engagement. His free style hip hop performances on stage are especially engaging, not just for the crowd but for many of his contemporaries who he challenges to a battle. This is the kind of performance that calls for creativity, and Fefe Busi never fails. He also took the crowd through his best hits from, Who is Who, to Idi Amin, Business and many more.

Fik Fameica has also stepped onto the entertainment scene and claimed his place amongst the biggest names right now. In fact, it is safe to say that he has replaced so many yesteryear artistes who have gone into hibernation. His performance was as entertaining as it was engaging.

Bebe Cool performs at DJ Nimrod's All White Beach Party.

But the young lads still have a lot of catching up to do with old timers Bebe Cool and Chance Nalubega. Bebe Cool still commands respect, 20 years into his music career today. His performances are as energetic as they were 20 years ago. It is clear he has progressed from his disrespectful table top performances, but he still gives the crowd what they are yarning for. Running wild with the dancers and grinding on stage with the girls like a Fefe Busi who has just found fame. He also performed at length a range of his hits including his hit of the moment, Katono, Ndi Wuwo, I do, Teka Sente, Mbozi Za Malwa and many more.

It was Chance Nalubega who was the surprise of the day. A rarity for a beach crowd, Nalubega will forever be etched in the many hearts of Ugandan revellers. Her hits which are well over a decade old continue to command audience attention especially Abateesi and Abenugu.

Deejay Nimrod says that every year his brand grows and his fan base doubles. “I never expect people that come for my parties and every year I get overwhelmed by the turn up. Each year I have different artists coming to entertain the fans and this year we have Chance Nalubega. She has never performed for a crowd at any beach and this then makes it her first performance at the beach. I am glad people still love her,” Nimrod Nabeera says.
