What you missed on the opening day of the Azam Uganda Premier League

By Robert Kayindi James

The new Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL) resumed on Friday 19th August at the different stadia across the country with eight fixtures played. Two wins and six draws were recorded on the day, five of the draws being goalless which further manifested the low scoring rates for the local league clubs. Eight goals were scored, seven of which were netted by debutants.

The Wins

Defending champions KCCA FC kicked off their title defence on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Jinja based side JMC Hippos at the Phillip Omondi Stadium. 2016 MVP (Most Valuable Player) opened the scoring for the reigning champions inside 20 minutes of the game off Paul Mucureezi’s attempt that failed to beat the JMC custodian. The Kasasiro Boys held onto the lead until halftime. In the second half, Viane Ssekajjugo, a summer recruit from The Saints levelled matters for the visitors at the one hour mark before Geoffrey Sserunkuma restored the host’s lead just after five minutes.

KCCA Fc vs JMC Hippos

At Muteesa II Memorial Stadium, Express FC came out on top of the Wankulukuku derby against Kajjansi based side Lweza FC. KCCA reject Herman Wasswa netted twice to win it for the Red Eagles while Karim Ndugwa, who joined from SC Villa scored for the Kajjansi Boys.

The stalemates

At the heart of Kampala, two time league champions Vipers Sports Club shared the spoils with Kawempe based side, Bright Stars. Fred Segujja, a signing from Sadolin Paints gave Bright Stars the lead while midfielder Ibrahim Kayiwa was on target for the hosts. Kayiwa joined the 2016 Uganda Cup champions from Express FC in July.

Elsewhere, the tie between Police and SC Villa ended in a goalless draw while the story wasn’t any different when Soana travelled to GreenLight Stadium in Aura to play league debutants Onduparaka. The result was the same when URA visited Kirinya in Jinja as well as in the tie between Bul and Proline, The Saints and Sadolin.

Key Statistics to note

Like the case was last season, Joseph Benson Ochaya once again scored the first goal of the season against JMC Hippos. Last season he scored it against Sadolin Paints. According to online sources, Herman Wasswa scored the fourth time on his debut. He it did for Masaka LC, KCCA FC, Sofapaka and now Express FC and only failed to do the same in 2012 at SC Villa. It was also being the third time the striker scored on the opening day of the season having done it in 2012/2013 for Villa against Bul FC, for KCCA against Police in 2013/2014 and for Express in 2016/2017 against Lweza.

The league continues on Tuesday 23rd August with all the 16 teams expected to be in action.

Express FC’s Alex Gitta, Wasswa Bbosa clash at Wankulukuku

Express FC

By Robert Kayindi James

There was a chaotic moment on the touchline during the Wankulukuku derby between Express FC and Lweza FC on Friday at Muteesa II Memorial Stadium as Alex Gitta and his coaching counterpart Wasswa Bbosa disagreed on tactics.

Gitta, whose CAF A class licence papers put him in the position of head coach, above Wasswa Bbosa almost cost the Red Eagles maximum points on the opening day of the Azam Uganda Premier league as the two gave out different instructions to the players. The two clashed as fans watched their team beat Lweza by 2-1 courtesy of Herman Wasswa’s brace that toppled Karim Ndugwa’s earlier to Ibrahim Kirya’s side.

“I’m happy Express managed to win its first opening game in many years but I’m frustrated my boys didn’t play according to the script because they didn’t fully follow my instructions,” Gitta quoted by local newspaper the Daily Monitor.

Apparently, Gitta had relegated Bbosa to the U-17 side midweek and elevated Douglas Bamweyana as his new deputy.

Namutosi Rose Helena crowned Miss Tourism Eastern

By Derrick Luyombya

Miss Tourism Eastern beauty queen was crowned on Saturday evening at Mbale Resort hotel amid a lot of disorganization.

To begin with, the competing girls did not go through a boot camp like the other regional pageants.  The girls were also not tested in their catwalk and special skills as the winner was crowned basing only on questions asked. This left many disappointed.

The event ended late in the night as the eastern region crowned it’s ambassadors for the Miss Tourism nationals. And to represent the region at the nationals is Namutosi Rose Helena, 22, from Mbale District who was crowned Miss Tourism Eastern. They will also be represented by Shanirah Chemutai, 22, from Kapchorwa District who was 1st Runner-up and Tekitendwa Sheila, 22 from Budaka district who was 2nd Runner-Up.

Last season on Coke Studio Africa, Nigeria’s Flavour had such a good time with Uganda’s Juliana Kanyomozi. This year however, Juliana is not on the show after she went off the radar to prepare to welcome a new life into this world.

As Flavour returned, our sources in Kenya told us that he looked out of place as his best collabo-mate, Juliana was missing in the picture.

He has however been teamed up with someone else to make more good music. We hope they will pull off as much chemistry, energy and good music as was the case last season when he was coupled with Juliana.

Onduparaka FC

By Robert Kayindi James

League debutants Onduparaka FC seek their first victory as they travel to the Champion Stadium today to take on home side Bright Stars as the Azam Uganda Premier League (AUPL) match day two takes course.

The Arua based Caterpillars had a promising start to the league after holding Soana FC to a goalless draw at GreenLight Stadium last week on Friday.

Fred Kajoba’s Bright Stars on the other hand also managed to hold Abdullah Mubiru’s Vipers SC to a one-all draw at Nakivubo Stadium.

Elsewhere, league defending champions KCCA FC are plotting to raid Lweza FC in a trip to Muteesa II Memorial stadium in Wankulukuku. The Kasasiro Boys had a great start to their title defence with a 2-1 victory over JMC Hipppos while the Kajjansi Boys lost their opening game 1-2 against the Red Eagles.

Once again, coach Mike Ray Mutebi will place his trust in veteran striker Geoffrey Sserunkuuma to hunt for goals against his former side. Enterprising midfielder Muzamiru Mutyaba is also back from injury and will be available for selection for the KCCA side.

Ibrahim Kirya on the other hand will be eager to avoid a second straight loss.
