Dancehall singer Beenie Gunter, real name Baguma Crescent, has finally dropped his new 25-track album dubbed ‘No Fear’.  He collaborated with several stars including Eddy Kenzo, Lydia Jazmine, Big Tril and Nigeria’s Skales, among others on the album.

The album is composed mostly of Reggae, Ragga, and Dancehall vibes and is made up of songs that had been released earlier like Oli Wadala, Sekkle Down, Commando, and No Letting Go (feat. Lydia Jazmine) among others.

On the new album, he tackles different topics ranging from his life struggles, to overcoming his fears, to music journey, his dreams as well as betrayal.

According to the singer, the “No Fear” album had been in the works for almost 4 years and every song was recorded freestyle.

“This day means a lot to me,” he stated during the album release party held at Talent Africa offices on Monday evening. “I have worked on this album for about 4 years and have put my heart in it. I am excited to finally be releasing it.”

He further revealed that with his new album, he hopes to disapprove his doubters who thought he could not make it singing in patois as he “takes Uganda to the world with no fear”.

Singer Nwagi has let her frustration get to her job and is starting to show lately. The singer has over time been rumored a very sad person after all her failed relationships and also being sidelined at Swangz and emphasis put on Vinka. This would not have been our problem until the singer started booking shows, getting paid for them and not showing up.

Huawei's New Managing Director Mr. Liujiawei giving his speech at the Seeds for the Future launch ceremony.

Mr. Liujiawei, the Managing Director Huawei Uganda.

By Our Reporter

Huawei global ICT competition has kicked off in Uganda with a road show in Makerere University. With the theme “Connection, Glory, Future”, the Huawei 2019-2020 Global ICT competition aims to provide a platform for global ICT talents to showcase their ability, compete and communicate, encouraging ICT-related study and drive the growth of a robust ICT talent ecosystem.

Over 6000 students from the various Universities all over Uganda are expected to participate in the contest with various subjects including network, Cloud Computing, artificial intelligence and big data.

Mr. Liujiawei, the Managing Director of Huawei Uganda noted that ICT skills gap has increasingly become a bottleneck for embracing opportunities in the digital era, as across all industries are poised to grow with rapid advances in emerging technologies, changing the very nature of the jobs.

He emphasized that it is important to foster an open and sustainable ICT talents ecosystem that involves different stakeholders to equip youths with employable skills and increase competencies relevant in the labor market.

“We need a comprehensive approach of skills development for employment, enhanced productivity and growth. Training contents must be aligned with skills requirements in the job market. That is why we re-dedicate ourselves to working even more closely with universities across the country to better equip students with the next generation of technologies and create the platform for the Ugandan students to demonstrate they are capable of maturing into world-class experts.” Liu said.

Skills gaps across all industries are poised to grow in the Fourth Industrial Revolution globally. There will also be strong demand for ICT-related skills. According to the World Economic Forum, at least 133 million new roles generated as a result of the new division of labour between humans, machines and algorithms may emerge globally by 2022. In Uganda, the ICT skills gap is also a challenge. Report by National Information Technology Authority shows that within MDAs, ICT personnel account for only 1.9% of the total work force.

To bridge the ICT skills gap and fostering ICT talent pool needed for national social economic development, Huawei Uganda has been working with government, industrial and academic partners in upskilling engineers, providing certification courses, sponsoring aboard studies and supporting government’s initiatives in promoting innovation and ICT learning. Huawei Uganda has so far signed up six universities across Uganda in launch establishment of academies, where students can access to industrially-recognized certification courses.

This is the second executive year for the global leading ICT solutions provider to bring the global event to Uganda. First round of registration will take place from 26 th August to 30 th October at Makerere, Kyambogo, Muni, MUST, Lira, Gulu, Busitema and many other private Universities respectively.

By Staff Writer

Every year come August, Ugandans get that strange little tingle, a feeling grows towards september and finally it hits you, it’s Nyege Nyege and you feel no pain, only joy and hapiness from what has now become one of the most talked festivals on the planet.

Everyone has an opinion on Nyege Nyege. Those that have attended: “the best party of my life”, “life transforming experience”, “I feel recharged” and even “I met my wife at Nyege”… And those that have not attended: “Nyege Nyege is evil”, “Nyege Nyege is too wild”, “Nyege Nyege is for rastas” and the list goes on. But what if we asked the artists, the people from Njeru, the hotel owners and the minister of Tourism, they all will have positive things to say about an event that directly affects them, in a positive way.

But few people know that Nyege Nyege is actually just a part of a much greater vision for the creative industry. The founders beieve in the creative arts economy as a potentail income greater than any resources found under the ground. Before Nyege Nyege was even an idea, the founders used to work with musicians and djs and music producers, as well as filmmakers, photographers, dancers, graffiti artists and fashion designers, always aiming at building strong communities and working together to find new ways to showcase creative talents.

With the demographics and job market of Uganda in a complex bind, the founders of Nyege Nyege saw that by expanding the access to market for people in the creative sector and by giving last mile support to talented individuals, it would generate interest worldwide and create more opportunities for the artists. That brings us back to the Nyege Nyege not many people know about. The two labels they run, nyege nyege tapes and hakuna kulala have both received internationa critical acclaim, the community studios that pushes young talents to the next level, a place for bands to rehearse and a networks that now spawns the whole planet. The festival received about 500 artist applications this year, a testament to its value for the artist community.

Artists know that Nyege Nyege can make careers the same way it has made designers and restaurants, right there and then, with over 40 international bookers in attendance, an underground artist has the chance to break through. Nyege Studios train and support emerging artists, the record label Nyege Nyege Tapes and the Nyege Nyege Festival now help promote the artist to a wide audience, and then come international tours and considerable income.

Nyege Nyege Tapes now has over 25 artists on it’s roster, 75% of the making considerable income from Europea, Chinese, American and South American tours, inspiring more artists to come to Uganda and learn about East African music and the region as a whole. So the festival is a celebration of the year’s works, for artists know that this is the performance that doesn’t do playbacks, it’s where the best come and shine.

Airtel Uganda offices

By Our Reporter

Airtel Africa, a leading telecommunications services provider with operations in 14 countries across Africa, has announced that it has crossed the 100 million customers mark across its operations. Airtel Africa is the second largest mobile operator in Africa by number of active subscribers.

Commenting on this milestone achievement, Raghunath Mandava, Airtel Africa’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “I am delighted to report that Airtel Africa has crossed the 100 million subscriber mark. This achievement is testament to the hard work of our employees and a clear reflection that customers value our network, service offerings and customer experience. The positive momentum we have seen in customer acquisition, further underpins our medium-term aspirations for revenue and profit growth. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teams that have worked hard to get us here.”

Airtel Africa’s footprint is characterized by low but increasing mobile connectivity, with a unique user penetration at 43%, highlighting the potential for growth across its footprint.

The company believes in enhancing connectivity and digitizing the countries in which it operates and has invested to expand its network footprint and number of 4G sites to enhance network capabilities and support its future business growth.

A combination of an under-penetrated telecom market, a young addressable population and rising smartphone affordability, along with low data penetration and an underbanked population, will drive the growth opportunities for the data and mobile money segments moving forward.

The Government of Uganda through the Uganda Clean Cooking Supply Chain Expansion Project, a Government of Uganda project, implemented by Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) is encouraging the public to use improved cook stoves dubbed ‘Supa Sigiris’ designed to use less charcoal, emit less smoke and cook faster than the ordinary cooking stoves found in most homes. Currently, Supa Sigiri’s can relieve their users of at least 360,000Ushs worth of annual charcoal expenses.

According to the 2016/2017 Uganda National Household Survey, almost every household in the country either uses charcoal or firewood for cooking, revealing that the dependency on firewood as a source of energy is straining the environment locally, regionally and globally. Ordinary Sigiri’s emit large amounts of black carbon which in the long run contribute to global warming.

The collective benefits of using any of the Supa Sigiri types are;

  • Supa Sigiris use less charcoal,
  • Supa Sigiris cooking time is greatly reduced thus making them a faster means of meal preparation,
  • Supa Sigiris emit less smoke, and therefore reduce the risk of health issues household members may face in association with smoke fumes released within the home,
  • Supa Sigiris also ensure a cleaner and safer environment generally in the home because of their unique design.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Capital FM Cook off with Supa Sigiri held last Friday, 23rd August 2019, Michael Oboth Sales Personnel for the Envirofit and Ecozoom cook stoves explained that the Envirofit and Ecozoom are a product of a World Bank research to combat climatic change which has become a global concern. ‘Both Envirofit and Ecozoom cook stoves save consumption rate of fuel by 58%, have a 78% faster cooking rate and 82% smoke reduction.’ Oboth added that one can cook with the Envirofit cook stove in the comfort of one’s choice:  on top of plastic tables, woollen carpets or tiles and they will not cause a fire outbreak.’

Biolite cook stove Representative Uganda Andrew Abacha said, ‘Biolite improved cook stoves can uniquely charge your phone or light up as you cook. It uses minimal amounts of firewood which in the long run addresses environmental, health and financial challenges. It also saves its users money as they need firewood worth only 500 Ushs to cook with every day.’

Charles Akamanya, Sales Representative and Project Development Officer for the Potential Energy cook stove said, ‘The Potential Energy cook stove is versatile, uses both charcoal and firewood, cooks at double the speed and comes with two provisions for cooking both at the top and bottom.’

Debbi Nansumba, Project Officer for the Smart Home Supa Sigiri Cookstove said that being part of the Uganda Clean Cooking Supply Chain Expansion Project has generally created awareness for the cook stoves and widened the market. She called upon the public to use Supa Sigiris cook stoves because of their benefits that make them unique from ordinary sigiris.

Mugwanya Ahmed the Sales Representative for Ugastove cook stoves said, ‘Ugastoves are durable, can work for 4 years, have less carbon emission, save energy and use less charcoal than ordinary sigiris.’

The Supa Sigiris come in 7 brands and are priced as follows:

MultiChoice Africa is thrilled to announce that the final students for the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Academy Class of 2019 have been chosen. After a two-month long rigorous selection process across 13 African countries, 60 aspiring filmmakers representing East Africa, Southern Africa and West Africa will begin their 12-month training programme at the MTF Academies in Nairobi, Lusaka & Lagos in October this year.

The final candidates were selected after a rigorous interview and adjudication process by film and television experts, as well as regional Academy Directors Njoki Muhoho (East Africa), Berry Lwando (Southern Africa) and Femi Odugbemi (West Africa). Launched in May 2018 as part of MultiChoice Africa’s ground-breaking corporate shared value (CSV) initiative, the MTF Academy is a 12-month fully-funded training programme aimed at upskilling the next generation of passionate young film creatives. As the first touchpoint of the shared-value initiative, the academy’s curriculum was tailored alongside MultiChoice Africa partner institutions Pan-Atlantic University in Lekki, Kenyatta University in Nairobi, and the University of Zambia in Lusaka, which will respectively confer the course qualification upon completion of the academy programme.

In addition, The Henley Business School offers an orientation intervention to the students at the beginning and end of the 12-month programme. The appetite for training opportunities across Africa is massive within the creative film and TV industry, according to MultiChoice Talent Factory Director Cheryl Uys-Allie, which is exactly why the MTF Academy programme was launched.“As one of the few industry players that not only tell African stories but also invest in them, the need for a dynamic training programme such as the MTF Academy has been a long time coming. As MultiChoice Africa, we always ask ourselves: what’s next in the industry, and how can we better prepare for it? The MTF Academy was the answer to that question: By giving young Africans the chance to hone their television and film production skills,” says Uys-Allie.The Class of 2019 is hot on the heels of the inaugural Class of 2018, who are ready to graduate and have their first films screened on M-Net channels and Showmax.

This year’s class will reap the additional rewards of -new partnerships between the MTF Academy and Jasco Broadcast Solutions as well as Nihilent with its connection to Bollywood, as well as existing partnerships with the New York Film Academy College of Visual & Performing Arts (NYFA), DOLBY Institute and Universal Music Nigeria (UMG). As part of their curriculum, the 2019 candidates will also be exposed to the MTF Masterclasses, aimed at upskilling industry professionals and emerging creatives alike by offering exclusive access to practical, expert-led industry skills workshops across the 13 participating countries. Here’s to another year of investing directly in Africa’s dynamic storytelling spirit through the MTF Academy!

A media campaign has been launched today at the Electoral Commission offices ahead of the 2020/21 General Elections. Electoral commission, a body that was constitutionally established by the Government of Uganda to organise and conduct elections in the country launched a media company that will kick off on Monday to September 14.

The company according to Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama, some polling stations will relocate from the usual areas to avoid chaos during election time. “Some Polling stations are located near bars and crowded places and these have been affecting the exercise of voting in the past years,” Byabakama said.

He went on to also assure the general public that the National ID alone will not be enough for someone to take place in the voting exercise come 2021. “Only Voters registered with electoral commission will take place in the process,” Byabakama said.
