dfcu Bank partners with Agriculture Development Centre and Rabobank to support farmer organizations

dfcu Bank has announced a partnership with The Agriculture Development Centre and Rabobank in an effort to support Farmer Based Organisations and Cooperative Unions across the country realize self-sufficiency; as an effective tool to transform the agricultural sector in Uganda.

The announcement was made at an event in Lira that was attended by various stakeholders and farmers from the region.

Speaking at the event, dfcu Bank’s Head of Corporate and Institutional Banking, Godfrey Mundua said the partnership between ADC, Rabobank and dfcu Bank is aimed at supporting farmer organizations become profitable, sustainable and ultimately bankable.

“The agricultural sector of Uganda is the backbone of our country. By proving employment for millions of Ugandans, it directly grows our economy. “dfcu Bank has always committed to the empowerment and growth of the agricultural sector in Uganda. Besides providing financial banking to our farmer clients, we have developed products that are tailor-made to meet the needs of their businesses- both as individuals and groups.”

The Agriculture Development Center will equip Cooperatives and Farmer Based Organizations (FBOs) with agribusiness skills through trainings in governance, financial management, financial literacy and marketing skills.

Godfrey Mundua concluded by emphasizing on the value of the partnership; “By partnering with The Agriculture Development Center and Rabobank, we will provide farmer based organizations in the region with the necessary skills that will eventually make them eligible for credit financing from commercial banks.

“By providing training skills in governance, financial management, financial literacy and marketing, we believe that the Farmer Based Operations will continue to grow their operations in ways that are of benefit to both them and the wider communities.”

The Executive Director of The Agriculture Development Centre; Ir. Anja de Feijter commented on the positive impact the partnership will have on farming communities across the country.

“ADC envisions promoting self-sufficiency as an effective tool to transform the agricultural sector in Uganda. This can be achieved by strengthening Farmer Based Organizations in respect of efficiency and creating economies of scale, in order to make them profitable, sustainable and bankable enterprises that are able to provide efficient and effective services to their farmers.”

The Agriculture Development Center started its operations in October 2017 in Eastern, Western, and Northern Uganda. Lira is the first District whose Farmer Based Organizations received a two-day training on various agribusiness skills including; governance, financial management, financial literacy and marketing expertise.

Radio presenter and singer Kapalaga Baibe, could be another victim of the police due to the message of his latest song titled ‘Abiriga’ where it is believed he was attacking the Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abriga as well as other political leaders like MP Anitta and Speaker Rebecca Kadaga

In the song Kapalaga talks about his lover called Anitta who is friend’s with Rebecca, Annita  doesn’t know how to make love and he refered to her as Abiriga. According to police, and UCC, in relation to the on going political situations in the country, such songs are considered political and are used to incite violence in the people

We have tried to rich Kapalaga for his comment about why he did a song with such a message but out efforts were fruitless since the singer chose not to pick up our calls

The Movit Talent Search winners rewarded

Movit has rewarded winners in the second edition of the Movit Kampala Talent Excellence.

Betty Nakyewa, the overall winner in the Movit Kampala Talent Excellence Initiative, receiving her cash prize of Ugx 3 million and a gift hamper from the Movit team lead by Bruce Mpamizo (L), Director Sales and Markwting.

Movit has today rewarded winners in the second edition of the Movit Kampala Talent Excellence Initiative. They received their cash prizes at an event held at the Movit Headquarters in Zana – Bunamwaya.

Handing over the cash prizes, Emmy Musasirane, Director Operations and Administration, Movit Products Limited, advised the emerging talents to be very creative and innovative if they are to go far in their chosen career path.

He also remarked that Movit will continue to support such initiatives that empower the community, hinting that they will expand the scope of the talent search to cover the whole of Uganda in the forthcoming editions.

The Movit Kampala Talent Excellence Initiative is aimed at supporting local talent by giving them a platform to showcase their potential and be exposed to the world. Auditions were conducted in the five divisions of Kampala where 25 contestants were selected and then housed at Front Page Hotel Zana for eight days while undergoing training in both their talent and business skills.

After a series of eliminations, nine contestants remained and tussled it out for the grand prize at the Movit Stage during the KCCA Carnival before a panel of judges and the public. The overall winner was chosen on how they scored in the public vote and overall presentation at the carnival.

Betty Nakyewa who emerged overall winner among the 25 contestants expressed excitement as she received the grand prize of Ugx 3 Million. She lauded Movit and partners for the initiative and further noted that this would help launch her music career.

Murungi Jeremiah, who was the 1st runner up, received Ugx 2 Million while Acheng Zamzam, the second runner up, received Ugx 1 Million.

Nigerian singer Ketchup is coming to Uganda.

We have learnt that the “Pam Pam” hitmaker will headline the Kampala Halloween party dubbed “Halloween SpookFest”.

Ketchup, who is returning to Uganda for the second time, will entertain revellers alongside a heavy line up of international and local deejays including A.G (UK), Spooky J (UK), Umojah (Holland), RPM and BK, Kampire, Dark Meme, Dj Aludah, Dj Rocky, Dj Xyzl, Dj Dash and Live percussions by Niholixa.

Organised by Talent Africa, the Halloween party promises to be a fun-filled experience. It will be set up at a haunted warehouse of horrors including 2 stages – The GraveYard Stage and The Spider stage – with each stage featuring a unique decor and theme.

It will take place on Saturday, October 28 at Design Hub.

Tickets at the entrance will cost 30k.

Fresh from being selected as the only Ugandan artiste who will perform at Tarrus Riley’s show in Kampala in December, reggae legend Maddox Ssematimba might have something else to be very excited about! The Namagembe star, we have learnt, might be recording a collabo with Riley.

According to sources at Bolt Digital- the company behind the Riley’s visit to Kampala, the Jamaican maestro was wowed by Maddox’s jams and he hinted on a possibility of doing something with him.

“He was extremely impressed by Maddox’s deep reggae beats; he asked if it would be nice for the two of them to work on something together,” the source told us. Maddox will share the stage with Riley when the latter performs at the Lugogo Cricket Oval on December 1.

Riley is famous for reggae jams like Don’t come back, Sorry is a sorry word, She’s royal, Gimme likkle one drop, and his latest, Just the way you are.

Omuweso first leaked weeks ago with some DJs playing it and despite it being in raw version before mastering, it was already a sellout, featuring on almost every DJs playlist which made fans to pressure Salme to release the official audio and yes, she answered their prayers by dropping it

Uganda’s dynamic duo, Radio and Weasel are pumped about their upcoming concert at which they will be celebrating 10 years in the music industry. This was evident as they addressed the media at press briefing held at Kyadondo rugby grounds on Wednesday.

The “Magnetic” hitmakers were very exuberant as they revealed that they are ready to celebrate their music journey thus far with their fans who have always supported them.

Speaking at the press conference, Mowzey Radio noted that fans should expect fire at the concert. “We want to give you fire on that day because that is what we know best. Thanks for the support and always allowing us to entertain you.” He said.

Weasel also added that they have every reason to celebrate because some many music groups have come and go, but they are still going strong.

“We are very excited and cant wait to entertain all our fans.” He stated. “We are one of the longest surviving music duos in Africa and that is reason to celebrate.”

The much anticipated Radio and Weasel 10th anniversary concert will take place on Friday, November 3 at Kyadondo Rugby grounds. Tickets will cost 20K (Ordinary) and 50K (VIP).

The concert is organised by Promoter Balaam and supported by MTN Uganda, Bell Lager and Coca Cola.

Africell Uganda and Uber have officially signed their ‘Uber With Africell’ partnership campaign agreement designed to enhance convenience with free rides for first time users.

The campaign which started on Twitter with the hashtag #UberWithAfricell on Thursday last week steadily grew to lead trends and by evening many Ugandan tweeps exhibited enthusiasm in the offer.

Users will get free 1st time rides up to UGX10,000 redeemable using promo Code TRIPLEDATA on downloading the Uber App on Google Play Store or the Apple Store.

While demonstrating how one can redeem their free ride, the Uber Country Manager Aaron Tindiseega said the two corporate bodies entered a partnership as a pay-it-forward sort of gesture to their existing riders as well as prospective riders.

”We are excited about this partnership. We want to give our new riders a feel of what Uber is like, before they start using the app every day to get from point A to B, and with this partnership, we will be able to achieve just that.” Tindiseega said.

Meanwhile the Africell Commercial Director, Milad Khairallah, said the Uber with Africell campaign is meant to demonstrate Africell’s dominance in the data market which has over time been tested and appreciated by Ugandans.

”For us, this is to share of our big heart as Africell. We are conveying the same generosity with which we triple our subscribers’ daily data to show both our customers and other people yet to switch to Africell that we have a heart for them,” Milad said.

According to the two companies, #UberWithAfricell will expand into even bigger and more exciting phases with promos in Africell stores and also in-transit on Uber rides.

There will be ‘Wifi on Uber’ where free Wifi hotspots will be availed to customers courtesy of Africell and also ‘Uber Dost’ where anyone in an Africell shop can order for Uber rides on immovable devices in Africell stores.

UBC to retire 30 employees

Uganda Broadcasting Corporation recently hosted the first capacity building workshop at Pearl of Africa Hotel as they prepare 30 of its staff for retirement.

The day-long workshop equiped retirees with skills to prepare them for the next stage in their lives with presentations to assist them diligently choose paths that best suit them. The presentations were from reputable personalities in investment, money management, Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and retirees from other industries sharing their life stories.

Following the tense political climate, Police has warned Radio and Weasel against turning their upcoming 10th anniversary concert political.

This was during a press briefing held at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds on Wednesday as the dynamic duo addressed the media about the the upcoming concert.

Speaking at the media briefing, Medard Tuhimbisibwe, the Head of Operations Jinja Police division cautioned the “Magnetic” singers against mixing music and politics during their concert.

“This is not a political show, so you should stay away from politics,” he said.

He also assured that Police will deploy heavily at the concert venue as he guaranteed security for revelers and their property.

Meanwhile, Radio and Weasel expressed excitement about their concert and have promised to give fans a memorable show.

We have learnt that the comedian was won over by a one Mirembe Lydia. According to our sources, the two love birds have been seen seeing each other for sometime and the couple feels ready to take their relationship to the next level.

Mariachi is planning to visit his lover’s home and officially ask for her hand in marriage. The introduction ceremony will be held in late November at Mirembe’s home in Kamuli district.

We gather the couple will thereafter start preparing for their wedding which will take place sometime next year.

Comedian turned politician, Kato Lubwama has refused to return the Ugx 29 Million that was given out to all MPs to enable them successfully carry out consultations on the Age Limit bill.

The Rubaga South MP revealed that he has no reason to reject this money and he will use it to help members of his constituency. He has since donated the funds to his constituency SACCO, according to media reports.

This comes after several other opposition MPs took back the money insisting that the  tax payers’ money should not be wasted on the Age Limit bill.

Musician turned politician, Bobi Wine is becoming unstoppable.

After Police recently barred him from holding concerts, the singer has decided to take his music shows online. This comes after the singer conducted an online poll seeking his fans’ opinion on whether he should remain silent or hold a music show online. The fans have voted overwhelming in favor of the online show.

Bobi Wine was recently denied permission by Police to hold music shows for allegedly turning his concerts into another avenue to further his political agenda.

Police claimed that the singer had incited the public at his last concert that was held at One Love Beach in Busabala, and they consequently blocked his subsequent concerts.

Deloitte launches value proposition for SMEs

Research shows that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are the engine for economic growth across Africa. In Uganda, the SME sector employs over 2.5 million people (90% of the entire private sector) and generates 80% of manufactured output, which contributes 20% of the gross domestic product (GDP).

However, the SME sector continues to grapple with a wide range of challenges including limited access to affordable finance, limited technical and business skills, informality of the sector, among other challenges which have impeded the growth of the sector. According to available statistics from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, majority of MSMEs (69%) are still in the first 5-10 years of their lives, signifying the high mortality rate of small businesses in Uganda.

In response to the challenges that SMEs in Uganda face particularly limited technical and business skills, Deloitte has developed an affordable subscription-based value proposition designed to meet the unique service needs of Uganda’s SMEs including bookkeeping and accounting, tax compliance, business performance insights and corporate governance.

The value proposition was launched on Thursday at an event held at Sheraton Hotel, and presided over by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Amelia Kyambadde. The event culminated in the signing of a three year Memorandum of Understanding between Deloitte and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives to collaborate on various initiatives in support of the development of the SME sector in Uganda.

The event was also attended by key stakeholders in Uganda’s SME sector including Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSDU), and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), African Development Bank, Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA), Uganda Small Scale Industries Association (USSIA), Uganda Chamber of Mines and Petroleum (UCMP), Commercial Banks, Mobile Network Operators, Manufacturing Companies, among others.

In addition, Deloitte together with key partners including Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Uganda Manufactures Association (UMA), Uganda Small Scale Industries Association (USSIA), Uganda Chamber of Mines and Petroleum (UCMP)offered free advice and guidance to SMEs on various matters ranging from registration of businesses, effective business management, tax compliance, sources of financing to support business growth, among other areas.

Ykee Benda makes his big break on Coke Studio Africa

Ykee Benda, real name Tugume Wycliff,  is a Ugandan musician and producer popular for songs include MunakampalaFarmer and Malaika among others. He makes his debut on Coke Studio Africa 2017 in the Big Break Segment collaborating with Jah Prayzah (Zimbabwe) and Mr Bow (Mozambique).

The multi-talented Ykee Benda started doing covers before launching his professional career in November 2015. This year, he won Breakthrough Artist and Best Collaboration of the Year in the recently concluded Zzina Awards (Uganda).

HE DOES IT ALL ON HIS OWN

Besides recording music, Ykee writes songs for himself and other artists as well. He also produces his own tracks. His inspiration comes from listening to African contemporary music and the Afro Beat genre. He has collaborated with Coke Studio Africa 2017 diva from Uganda, Sheebah Karungi on the remix of his song Farmer – a hit song that is credited with putting him on the map. Besides music, Benda is also a representative of Reach a Hand, an initiative that supports girl education.

BEHIND THE MUSIC

Ykee Benda was born to Alex and Ruth Mpakanyi and is the seventh born in a family of eight. He grew up in Kireka, a suburb in the Ugandan capital Kampala. Benda started singing in the Sunday school choir in a small church around his home and his passion for music grew tremendously while in campus in Annaba, Algeria, where he started by doing covers of different kinds of music while learning song writing and vocal training. Ykee also loves football and is a staunch supporter of the Arsenal Football Club.

Namalere is a cocktail of many other songs fusing songs previously done in a clever way. The new sound will sound familiar to you yet it is a completely new song. Kitone in Namalere also gets a crystal clear picture by Fixon.
The video has already accumulated close to 3000 views in a short period of time.

Kitone has in the past done songs like Bwojo, Okwagala, Guarantee, Binsunasuna, Segusa among others.
Namalere was done by fresh vybs records and video shot by Fixon Douglus.

Last night as always, Diners lounge was filled to Capacity, with Ronnie MCvex and DJ Bryan Ting dis as the hosts, Ssenga Nantume, Pastor Bugingo, Jaja Wasswa, Mad Rat and Chiko cracked ribs as the crowd was left in tears as the stars performed.

The main guest of the night, Ykee Benda stepped on stage at exactly 11.40, even amidst of the little rain drops, the crowd cheered on as he performed ‘Malaika’, Farmer Rmx, Byonkola and Super Man.

LightHouse Television (LTV), one of the oldest TV stations in Uganda, is gearing up for its 20th anniversary celebrations.

The Christian station which has been operating in Uganda since 1997 will celebrate 20 years of existence at a dinner gala to be held at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel this Saturday, October 28.

Addressing media, Robert Bob Nicholes, the Chairman LTV, revealed that starting up the station in Uganda was almost abandoned after they were frustrated on their first attempt.

“Our first trip was in 1995. We arrived in Uganda and started looking for property for the station to be built and could not find anything. We got back on the airplane and headed back to USA. We said we would never be back but we did come back.” He retrospected. “We started on the air in August 1997 and we have been on air ever since.”

The Station Manager, Mr. Gary Everret also noted that, “We have been around blessing the nation with christian programming for a long time. We are celebrating 20 years of broadcasting the gospel of Jesus Christ, christian talk shows and gospel music among others.”

Beer Olympics excite campusers as they are officially unveiled. [Photos]

A new exciting game targeting campusers has been unveiled.

Dubbed “Beer Olympics”, the Black Bell sponsored games were launched at Game Club on Thursday evening as Makerere University faced off with Kyambogo University in different games including Beer pong, Beer checkers, and  Shooting challenge.

The games kicked off with Beer Checkers, and then to Beer Pong and finally the Shooting challenge.

The excitement was palpable as the campusers cheered on their teams as Kyambogo University went on to finally emerge victors on the evening after garnering 10 points. They beat Makerere University in  beer pong and beer checkers  and lost the shooting challenge.

According to Paul Rwandekeye – Innovations Manager, Uganda Breweries Limited, the different universities set to participate in these exciting games include Makerere University, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Kyambogo University, and Uganda Christian University Mukono.

The finalist will win an all-expenses-paid Black Bell party at any location of their choice.

The Beer Olympics will happen at various bars and venues around town including Game, Trends, Pool nest, Comrades, Casablanca, and Vegas among others.
