The Emirates Airline Foundation along with Outreach to Africa (OTA) has established a school with three sections; nursery, primary and secondary; The Emirates Airline Foundation campus in Geme village near Fort Portal, Kabarole District, Western Uganda. The campus is presently catering for 850 pupils and students in both day and boarding sections. What began as a collaboration to provide basic health care services to residents in 2010, has grown to become a fully-functioning school. Upon the completion of the on-going construction and renovation work currently underway, the capacity of the school will increase.

The Paul Devlin School was started by OTA in 2008; an NGO located in Fort Portal, Kabarole district, Western Uganda with a mission to empower communities by providing quality education, health care and economic empowerment projects. In 2014, The Emirates Airline Foundation in partnership with OTA announced the commencement of a project valued at over US$ 1.5 million towards a building project that would transform The Paul Devlin School. The construction of The Emirates Airline Foundation Campus – a new wing of the School, will enhance the infrastructure and capacity of the school, allowing more students to enrol and receive a well-rounded education.

“The Emirates Airline Foundation is deeply committed to helping disadvantaged children around the world. The school that we are building with OTA will contribute to empowering communities and transform the lives of so many children,” said Sir Tim Clark, Chairman, The Emirates Airline Foundation.

“Our work in Uganda over the past eight years has enabled us to meet our objectives as an organization, and this project also ties in with the goals of the Ugandan government to eradicate poverty through increasing access to education,” he added.

The Emirates Airline Foundation Campus is expected to be completed by December 2018; in time for the start of the new academic year in February 2019. The new facility of the Emirates Airline Foundation Campus will include dormitories for boarding students, sports fields, staff housing, a library and computer laboratory, a dining hall, and classrooms.

Over the years, the Paul Devlin School has enrolled thousands of students from vulnerable communities. Mr. Edward Nyakabwa, a board member with OTA said, “we have the responsibility to significantly meet the needs of and improve the lives of the communities in which we are stationed. The new wing whose construction was funded by The Emirates Airline Foundation will enable us to increase the number of students who will, in turn, reap the invaluable asset of education.”

“We admit students from the surrounding Rwenzori region and other districts in Uganda. A large number of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and are in need of a quality education that will improve their socio-economic standing. This expansion means that we are now equipped to improve the lives of many students who might have otherwise not received any form of formal education,” Mr. Nyakabwa added.

As most of the top musicians we have in Uganda originate from Masaka and Jinja, Luwero has always had only one top artiste David Lutalo representing them.

However over the years, there has emerged singer Chris Johnz who is also from Luwero, the singer has caused threats to many top singers in Uganda, releasing top songs like Kawunyemu, Osena Ku Nyanja, Yenze Answer Club banger Akagere etc and controversial song Taata Wankizo that many music critics claimed Bebe Cool copied

After releasing Abantu Bawansi, a song that is topping charts already, we can comfortably say that David Lutalo and Chris Johnz are now sharing the crown as the kings of music in Luwero, the two can now sit on the same table and discuss music or the future of young stars emerging from Luwero though they haven’t been given an ear before

With this fast pace Chris Johnz is taking, we are looking forward to see whether he will be consistent like how David Lutalo managed to be since his break through Kapapaala. Hope we are yet to see a concert this or next year for the work shown so far

Rodney P and Skits bringing down the House

By Our Reporter

The annual Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) concert organized by Alliance Française Kampala took place on Saturday at the French School, École Française, Des Grands Lacs. The concert followed a week of activities like a traditional instrument making workshop and an opening event in which Ugandan top stars, Eddy Kenzo and the Ghetto Kids, joined Giovanni Kremer to engage with migrant children in the project Voices Without Borders that uses music as a tool of repair and resilience in Uganda’s Bidi Bidi Refugee Camp.

The main concert on World Music Day, June 23rd – sponsored by Alliance Française, the Embassy of France, École Française, Total, Brussels Airlines and SafeBoda – brought together a diverse crowd of Kampala music lovers, both young and old, foreign and Ugandan, fans of hip hop and French culture. MC’d by Jora MC and Adele, the show started at exactly 6pm with heart-warming opening performances from the French School Music Club and Breakdance Project Uganda kids. Destiny Nsonga, a rising star, blew the crowd away with her performance just before a live band, ‘The Groovetones’ took over and had everyone dancing.

Breakdance project Uganda kids entertain revelers at the World Music Day concert.

Breakdance project Uganda kids entertain revelers.

When the lady MCs stepped on stage, they stole the show. Yallah MC, one of the First Ladies of Ugandan hip hop, and newbies K’Van and Recho Rey, all performed like they were out to prove and claim their place in the mostly male dominated genre. We can confirm that they indeed owned the night.

The guys were not left out. Artists such as Byg Ben Sukuya all the way from Mbale and Nemesis Keya represented hard, just before Control Posse Kongoloko and the hiphop-lingala mash up R’Afrika from DRC had everyone dancing with joy.

The main act, straight from London UK and known as one of the godfathers of London hip hop, Rodney P, hit the stage right after R’Afrika. He performed with the artist/DJ/producer, Skitz. The two threw down a raw, old-school hip hop set mixed with reggae rhythms that had the crowd living their best life, from older fans who were excited to see the stars they’ve known for so long, to those who had never heard of Rodney P and Skitz and certainly enjoyed the lesson in hip hop history. The closing act performed until midnight exactly, then the crowd left for the after party at Big Kafunda, where the celebration of music continued late into the night.

INTERVIEW: Pia Pounds talks relationship with Eddy Kenzo, Fashion and Music

Pia Pounds

By Demo Riley

She is curvaceous, with a glowing smile and was recently signed to Eddy Kenzo’s Big Talent, making her the first female artiste to be signed by Big Talent (at least officially). But who is Pia Pounds? Well, we caught up with her and this is what she has to say.

For starters, who is Pia Pounds?

My real name name is Tracy Kirabo. My father abandoned us and my mum raised us as a single mother but later died and left me and my siblings with her sisters.

I was raised on a staunch Christian foundation, I was the lead vocalist in my church choir all my childhood.

I became immensely drawn to music when I was 8, I felt like no one understood me… and the best way I could express myself was through music. I became an outlaw at the age of 13 when I ran away from home because I felt mistreated and always misunderstood. Call me the black sheep of the family and certainly yes, I am very different.

I struggled while I was a teenager, with tuition and rent because I had to provide all that myself, my situation forced me to grow at a very tender age. I’ve worked in half the supermarkets and restaurants around Kampala, insurance companies too because I started working during the holidays of senior 3.

I’ve learnt to be independent and since I was a kid, I’ve always known music was the only thing I was truly good at. At 14 years of age, I was surrounding myself with music related environment because that’s where I felt confident the most.

I have always been insecure and very shy. I love music and art, writing, fashion, food and am a psycho for love.

Well, now that you’re under Big Talent, how is your experience working with Eddy Kenzo?

Big Talent in some way is more than just a label to me; it’s family. It’s one of those places where I feel safest the most. I’ve grown close to everyone there, sometimes I wonder what took me so long to find them.

We work hard, always in studio, always in training. So far, I love it there. And I hope my dreams really become a reality.

By the way there’s been rumor that your relationship with Eddy Kenzo goes beyond just music, how true is that?

I have grown weary explaining to my fans and Uganda at large that me and Eddy Kenzo have only business in common.

Eddy Kenzo is a very tough man, he has no time to play, you have no idea how many times he scolds me(laughs). He’s a great mentor and director, his heart is too big and I feel sad that people hardly see all this.

Many female artists whose music journey started off in labels have been dogged by similar rumors, for example Rihanna was accused of dating Jay Z, and Rema was rumoured to be dating Bebe Cool, but time is a healer.

You recently confessed that countless men have been approaching you for sex, how are you dealing with that?

I never said that countless men approach me for sex. The media chose to twist my words into what they wanted to hear.

I simply said in this industry, many females as viewed as sex objects that’s why thousands either fail or quit. It’s unfair how the world connects sex to our talents that If Pia is an artist it means she’s a whore. We are better than that and we deserve a little more respect.

Besides that, who’s the lucky man taking care of you?

Honestly, I am not ready to disclose my relationship status.

Three things you can’t leave without?

Definitely food, my fully charged phone and lipstick

What would you say is your inspiration, fashion wise?

Like I said, I was always insecure and I thought little of myself. Until one day in 2015 when I met Fatumah Asha. I was in my first year at university and she told me I had such an amazing body and she couldn’t wait to have me in some of her dresses. That compliment changed my life, next thing you know I walked into my school Miss registration office and registered as an aspiring Miss IUEA (International University of East Africa) in the competition I was crowned Miss IUEA second runners-up and Miss IUEA talent.

I was filled with so much confidence that out of 54 contestants I was a chosen one. I then met Bettina Tiana who became another inspiration and big mentor, most outfits I put one are chosen by her. I knew fashion was part of me, it makes me confident to put on a good outfit, there’s how it transforms my whole look.

Pia Pounds

Who’s your best male artist Ugandan artiste and why?

I have like 5, first the late Moses Radio – this man was exceptional, he wrote so damn well. He’s music took me through so many years of loneliness. And vocally, he was a genius.

Second is Eddy Kenzo. Before I knew him I thought he was just lucky but after seeing how creative he is in person, he can freestyle on 5 tracks in one day and he will release them all. He chooses his words in a way that makes them very relatable to the listener and hard to forget. My fave songs from him are – Twala Ewamwe, Stress free and Jubilation.

The third is David lutalo – I think he’s a very talented man. He writes so well and he’s voice is beautiful, his jam ‘So Nice’ is always on replay at my house.

Lastly, Fik Fameica. This kid has changed the whole Hip-pop industry of Uganda. I am his big fan.

Musically, what should your fans expect from you this year?

Music, music, music and more music.

The first time I was signed my boss he told me “Gwe ogenda ku kikuba”

We have a lot of work, only waiting for the perfect time to release it. I have great collaborations some with the male artists I mentioned above. I keep bettering my product all the time so the once a song is released, it’s hard to be taken un-seriously.

Some of the future prospects?

An album will be dropped at the end of this year. And lots of collaborations.

Last message for your fans?

I love them so much. They push me into becoming the best version of myself. I don’t intend to let them down, believing in me is a gift I take very seriously. Greatness is where we are headed.

NSIMBI: Self-Titled Album Debuts on Global Charts

GNL Zamba has released a brand new album dubbed Nsimbi album.

Nsimbi is a world fusion album written and performed by the duo made up of international Ugandan hip hop MC GNL Zamba and gifted American worldbeat artist Miriam Tamar. The album debuted on the USA iTunes World Music Chart at #6, the Canada iTunes World Music Chart at #3, and the Uganda iTunes Chart at #3. Nsimbi has so far been featured in prominent international press outlets such as PopMatters, Vents Magazine, Financial Times and KCRW radio Los Angeles and continues to gain momentum on USA media and radio rotation.

Nsimbi is now available worldwide on all online platforms (iTunes Store, Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, Amazon) and also available for purchase through the SulaPay app using Mobile Money in Uganda.

The 13 track album has the following songs; Dunia Ni Matembezi, Leo Ni Leo, Mujje, Omugga, Forsaken, Koona, Acholi Boy, Gonna Be Alright, Flower of the Heart, Kulusozi, Moonglow, Sokota ft Jaja Bashengezi and Amaka.

Speaking about the new album, GNL had this to say; “Echoing positive messages from the past to the present, so we can advise the future, we hope that Nsimbi shows the possibility of living in harmony once we do away with our differences and focus on what makes us all human. Collaboration was essential to this project. Our wonderful creative partners, multi-instrumentalists Jaja Bashengezi and Kinobe Herbert, played all 18 instruments on the album with fiery finesse and heart. Nsimbi is written in Swahili, Luganda, English and Lingala.”

“This project is filled with so much love and intention, and we genuinely hope it brings our listeners joy and a sense of journey through East African culture and human connection. The album is a collection of songs and poems guided by our experiences combined with ancient Swahili and Buganda wisdom that we discovered in proverbs and folklore. This wisdom is so relevant in today’s divided times. We’re thrilled the Financial Times reviewed our album as Afropop dynamism. Miriam Tamar and GNL Zamba’s singing and rapping, respectively, are a perfect mix of soulful and direct,” he added.

Nsimbi is the Luganda word for a cowry shell, but is a symbol of all indigenous communities as it is found on all continents. It denotes abundance in spirit and wealth, and it resembles the life-giving organ of the earth symbolizing continuity.

Watch our Live Nsimbi EPK Video to learn more about the album.

ABOUT NSIMBI THE DUO:

Nsimbi is a duo formed by Ugandan hip-hop artist GNL Zamba and American world fusion artist Miriam Tamar. Building on the acoustic sounds and indigenous instruments of Africa, Nsimbi blends contemporary elements of hip-hop and spoken word with English/Western songwriting techniques and vocals to merge the traditional with the modern. A global sound anchored in the rich messages of ancient East African proverbs and folklore emerges with their debut self-titled album, scheduled for release in summer 2018. The collection bridges cultures with lyrics in English, Swahili, Luganda and Lingala.

The duo met six years ago in Uganda, and have collaborated in Africa and in the United States. Nsimbi is their first album together and includes contributions by East African musicians they long admired, Kinobe and Jaja Bashengezi. Bound by the kindred world travelers who embrace the beauty of dialogue and human connection through music, each artist’s background shapes the sound of the album.

GNL Zamba is among East Africa’s most influential hip-hop artists, credited with bringing rap to the region’s mainstream culture by using Uganda’s indigenous language in a style known as Lugaflow. Nominated for over 30 African music awards, winning 12, GNL has performed throughout the world, including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture, We Love Africa Music Festival in Denmark, Selam Africa Music Festival in Ethiopia, and Sauti Za Busara Festival in Zanzibar.

Fusion vocalist and songwriter Miriam Tamar creates empowering soundscapes that journey through the vibrant rhythms of world culture. Her mix of genres reflects global travels and the communities she’s lived within, including five years spent in Uganda developing peace education curriculum to rebuild the lives of post-conflict children. Profoundly transformed and determined to remind people of the beauty beyond borders, Miriam’s most recent Firedance EP debuted in the Top 5 of the iTunes World Music Chart and has been featured on Huffington Post as the video for her single, “Who We,” has over 500,000 views.

As passionate global citizens, Nsimbi is developing an educational curriculum tied to the themes of cross-cultural exchange, appreciation, and dialogue explored in their album. Workshops will be part of their album world tour.

MTN Uganda has today inked a deal with pay TV giant StarTimes Uganda that will see the telecommunications giant offer special promotional MTN TV bundles for viewers to watch the latest StarTimes entertainment, sports and news for as low as UGX 2,000 (for two hours) and UGX 4,000 (for four hours) per day using the StarTimes app.

Present at the event was the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Uganda, Mr. Olivier Prentout, who gave key remarks about the partnership:

“We are happy to partner with StarTimes Uganda as we continue our vision of delivering a bold, new digital world to our customers. StarTimes, as the market leader in paid TV subscriptions, reaches out to the widest range of customers across Uganda. This is important in ensuring internet access – as well as TV content – is accessed by as many customers as possible”.

He also highlighted the benefit of the affordable time based data bundles that will be used to access the StarTimes content using the StarTimes app:

“Video content uses a lot of data to stream/watch/download. Using our partnership, we shall offer time based bundles; so if you for example want to watch a football match, you can buy a two hour bundle and never worry about running out of data mid-way your viewing” said Mr. Olivier Prentout.

Speaking at the launch, which was held at the MTN Headquarters along Jinja Road, Mr. Aldrine Nsubuga, Vice President and Brand & Marketing Director of StarTimes Uganda, was thrilled at the partnership:

“As the leading pay TV in Uganda, we are delighted to be launching this partnership with the largest telecommunications company in Uganda. The FIFA World Cup is the largest single event in the world and everyone wants to be a part of it. As official broadcasters of Russia 2018, this innovation should enable every Ugandan with a phone to follow and enjoy the FIFA World Cup wherever they are at their convenience affordably” he said.

During the launch Aldrine Nsubuga also spoke about the future of television being streamed through the internet rather than through telecommunications, multichannel televisions and broadcast television, something that Olivier Prentout highlighted.

“With more and more people being connected to smart phones and steady internet, TV will become something that will be mandatory to access on the go. The only way to do this is through having unlimited access to all their TV entertainment. We believe that the MTN – StarTimes Uganda partnership can deliver this” said Olivier.

At the launch, members were explained to how the timing of the bundle only references the total time spent consuming content on the StarTimes app. If one buys a two hour bundle and watches it for 10 minutes then stops, the time counter also stops. When you resume and watch for another 20 minutes and then you stop, your total time used will be 30 minutes. This goes on until your total usage is equal to two hours, and then the bundle expires.

To load a bundle, MTN customers can dial *165*4*7# on their mobile phone and select StarTimes. Terms and Conditions will apply.
