Miranda Bageine Musoke, the Manager dfcu Investment Clubs, speaking during the ‘Battle for Cash’ season 2 launch.

dfcu Bank, in partnership with NTV Uganda and Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) have launched Season II of the Investment Clubs Challenge dubbed ‘Battle for Cash.’ Battle for Cash is a nationwide campaign targeted at instilling a savings and investment culture in Uganda.

In 2017, dfcu Bank held a six-month long campaign that had its teams go round the country carrying out regional saving and financial literacy workshops. Some of the topics covered included; Why and how to save, where to invest money so it can grow, things to think about when thinking of investing and so much more. This was aimed at changing the perceptions and attitudes about money, savings and investments. With over 200 investment clubs applying to enter the campaign, 20 clubs were selected and pitted against each other in a competition that saw Geneber Outspan Organic Farmers from Amolatar emerge as overall winners walking away with a cash prize of UGX 25 million.

As part of several efforts to promote a savings culture in Uganda, dfcu Bank introduced the Investment Clubs program in 2007 providing a conducive platform to foster group savings.

The dfcu Bank program has since grown with over 15,000 active Investment Clubs that cut across all segments including students, the professionals, women and youth. Following last year’s inaugural campaign, dfcu registered an increment in Investment Clubs with over 6,000 Clubs being set up from July 2017 to date.

Speaking during the launch of the second season of Battle for Cash, the dfcu Bank Chief of Business and Executive Director, William Sekabembe said; “Financial inclusion is a major agenda for dfcu Bank. We have been taking the lead on this since 2007 when we introduced the Savings & Investment Clubs. We believe that providing financial literacy is critical in driving financial inclusion in a sustainable way. As we launch the second season of Battle for Cash, we will be looking to build on the achievements of Season 1. There was a positive response to the campaign in respect to the financial literacy workshops across the country and the competition in general so we believe there is a greater opportunity to raise more awareness and challenge notions about savings and investments.”

The clubs that took part in the six-month challenge benefited a lot from the theoretical and practical sessions with the specialist trainers in different areas of business. The clubs were challenged to re-examine how they run their operations, aspects of governance, their investment ideas, their savings models and so much more.

“The growth and change we have seen in the clubs that took part in the challenge last year is commendable and is directly in line with our brand promise of Making more Possible,” Sekabembe added.

Season II promises to present participants with intense and more challenging tasks and even greater learning opportunities. According to Miranda Bageine Musoke, the Manager dfcu Investment Clubs, there will be more winners and prizes and greater audience engagement.

“We have maintained the financial literacy workshops and regional prize draws to be held in 6 regions of the country to create more awareness and involvement in the campaign. In terms of categories we have maintained the special category for Women Clubs and Youth to increase their chances of winning. Unlike last year when the audience only got a chance to vote for the Clubs that would win, this year we will be involving the public in the competition right from the start of the show. As the audience follows the show every week, viewers will be able to vote for their favorite Investment Club to stay in the competition till the end. This will serve as a motivation to the club and also increase audience engagement,” she added.

The ‘Battle for Cash,’ challenge will provide a free platform to Investment Clubs to showcase their success stories over a period of six (6) months. Additionally, clubs which are able to present innovative investment ideas and demonstrate the ability to consistently pool savings towards the realization of their objective for a minimum period of six months will be eligible to enter the competition. They will have the opportunity to show case their ideas and investment projects on NTV Uganda.

dfcu bank has increased the overall cash prize for the second season of ‘Battle for Cash’. In comparison to last year where the winners got UGX. 25 million, this year, the winners will walk away with a cash prize of UGX. 30 million. Registration for this year’s challenge starts on 27th June 2018 and will go on till the 26th August 2018. The TV show will start airing on NTV Uganda in September.

The NTV Uganda Managing Director, Johnson Omolo said: “At NTV we are happy to be part of ‘Battle for Cash’ for the second year running together with our partners dfcu Bank and PwC. As a leading broadcaster, we value financial literacy and investment clubs as a catalyst to behavioral change for both our audiences and Ugandans at large and there is no better platform than ‘Battle for Cash’. We promise to deliver an entertaining and action packed production for Season 2.”

Over UGX 100 million in prize money has been set aside for the best Investment Clubs. Additionally, one delegate from each of the 20 selected clubs that will enter the competition will be sponsored to attend a study tour in Nairobi to share experiences, network, and widen their knowledge and contacts. This as the top seven (7) clubs receive free business advisory services, from PwC for a period of one (1) year.

Zari Hassan has been accused of stigmatizing people living with HIV following her eyebrow raising comments on social media about ARVs.

The South Africa based Ugandan socialite took to social media on Monday, to sound off people claiming that the child support she gets from her ex Diamond Platinumz finances her lavish lifestyle. In her post, the mother of five reaffirmed that she is self-made, adding that the message was intended for some people and that those not concerned should not “ropoka kama ARV’s kufichwa mchana, kumezwa usiku,” meaning, “should not act like people who hide ARVs during day time and swallow them during night time.”

Zari Hassan
This angered her fans who criticized her of stigmatizing HIV victims, with one fan commenting;
“She should have thought of her followers who are victims before making such a statement..it’s not funny at all!”

Five weeks ago, the Coco-master posted a video on his Instagram page, showing him walking hand in hand with his now deceased one year old son Daniel but the toddler’s attention was drawn more to the pool despite his father leading him away from it.

This prompted a number of fans to question the safety of the baby and asked D’Banj to put in place a number of precautionary safety measures, like watching him carefully and erecting a gate to limit the toddler from accessing the swimming pool without an adult.

D’Banj’s son died on Sunday, June 22, after drowning in the same pool, while the singer was in US attending the 2018 BET Awards.

Health Care Discrimination for Uganda’s Sexual and Gender Minorities — Report

By Our Reporter

Sexual Minorities Uganda,  an NGO that advocates for the protection and promotion of human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Ugandans, has released a report on Health Care Discrimination for Uganda’s Sexual and Gender Minorities.

Authored and researched by Austin Bryan, Research Fellow at Sexual Minorities Uganda, the report is based on in-depth interviews conducted with in the LGBTI community in Kampala from 2015 to 2017, as well as activists, researchers, journalists, and government officials in the Ministry of Health.

According to the CIA World Factbook, about 390,000 individuals of Uganda’s total population are sexual and gender minorities. In addition, a 2016 study of 3,000 Ugandan University students found that about 1 in 3 students reported having been “in love with someone of the same sex,” while nearly 1 in 5 reported being “attracted to someone of the same sex”.

The report indicates that despite this, no government funding is directly allocated in the health sector budget for reaching sexual and gender minorities as a key population, with funding almost exclusively from NGOs.

It adds that sexual and gender minorities face several barriers in accessing health services including: non-inclusive policies and programming, knowledge and attitudes of health service providers, and all forms of discrimination against LGBTI persons.

Furthermore, the report found that although the Ministry of Health, in response to Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2014, issued guidelines for non-discrimination of sexual minorities at all health facilities, it has not gone far enough to make sure they are actually followed.

Due to the discrimination while seeking health services, and accounts of discrimination towards LGBTI persons, the report says many sexual and gender minorities avoid going to hospitals or health clinics altogether. According to the report, this has put the general population of Uganda at a higher risk for general health concerns when compared to the rest of the world, and especially at risk for epidemic diseases such as HIV.

The Pay TV scene in Uganda is undergoing a revolution with the incorporation of the ability of subscribers to enjoy their favorite programmes on the go. This is due to the proliferation of smart phones in the market and reducing costs of internet data.

Multichoice through their flagship brand, DStv Uganda launched DStv Now, a service offering not just movies and catch up content but live TV too. The product which has been on the market for more than two years now has two services Live TV and Catch Up.

Ms. Tina Wamala, the Public Relations Officer MultiChoice Uganda says DStv Now is a special service that can be enjoyed by all DStv Subscribers and it is a value added service as long as one has the DStv app downloaded on their phone.

“As we progress in the World Cup season, our subscribers can watch the matches on their smart phones by simply downloading the app. DStv Now allows up to 4 devices using the subscribers connect ID and is available on the web, on Android and iOS devices especially smartphones and tablets,” she said.

To get the app, subscribers just need to download the app from the Google play or Apple App Store, launch the app and login to your DStv account with your connect ID, link your smartcard to your DStv Now account and then start watching.

The move was influenced by the growth in internet usage among Ugandans who majorly access data from the telecom companies. There are currently seven telecom companies in Uganda which are majorly offering both voice and data services.

According to the statistics from Uganda Communications Commission, the telecom sector in Uganda has registered growth in the 3 rd quarter of 2017 registering a 10 per cent increase in internet users who rose from 15m in 2016 to 17m in 2017. The estimated mobile internet subscribers increased to 14.8 million up from 13.3 million people in 2016. Prepaid Internet subscribers increased by 3 per cent registering growth from 23m recorded in 2016 to 24.2 per cent in last quarter of 2017. The internet penetration per 100 persons also increased by 6 per cent recording 48.2 per cent in 2017 up from 45 per cent recorded in 2016.
