In a bid to enhance recycling and waste segregation, Hariss International Limited the manufacturers of the Riham Products have entered into a partnership with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) where they will be providing Two Hundred and Seventy Five (275) Litter Bins to all KCCA schools, and division offices within Kampala District.
Hariss International Limited. has a strategic goal to sensitize the youth in Uganda on the importance of plastic recycling. Their aim is to grow and inhabit a culture of recycling among the youth right from an earlier stage. They will invest in awareness initiatives, and easy to learn teaching campaigns that can assist the youth to understand what to recycle, how to recycle, and where to recycle.
Hariss International Limited. believes in a spherical economy where recycled plastic bottles can not only be reused for various other purposes but where the act of recycling can also be used as an alternative source of income for our community and wealth creation for the nation.

They will be officially handing over the said litter bins to KCCA at Kawempe Church of Uganda Primary School on Monday, 19th November 2018.
“In order to grow a recycling culture within our nation it is quintessential for us to collectively set a foundation upon which recycling can actually be achieved. It would be somewhat pointless to request an individual to a recycle a plastic bottle when they have to walk over a mile to find a recycling point. Therefore we all have a responsibility not only as manufacturers but as citizens of Uganda, to see to it that we can ease access to recycling especially within schools where we are endeavoring to encourage the youth to inhabit a culture of environmental conservation.” Ms. Racheal Luwedde the Public Relations manager Hariss International Limited noted.

They anticipate to further grow such partnerships in collaboration with more local communities, municipals, and authorities across the country.

MTN implements reduced Mobile Money Tax

  • The reduction of the mobile money tax is from 1% to 0.5% on withdrawals only and takes effect on Saturday 17th November 2018
  • There is no more tax when sending or receiving money and making payments

Kampala, Uganda  MTN Uganda has today implemented the revised tax measures on mobile money transactions – from 1% to 0.5% on withdrawals only.

The implementation comes after the assenting of the Excise Duty (Amendment) Act (2018) into law by President Yoweri Museveni. This Act reduces the tax that went into force on 1st July 2018 and limits its application to only withdrawals from customers’ mobile money wallets. The tax will not apply to other forms of mobile money transactions like payments, sending and receiving money and deposits or buying of airtime and bundles using MTN MoMo.

This is a welcome move that is applauded by the industry because the customers spoke, and they were listened to. MTN’s hope is that the reduction in the tax will bring back mobile money customers who had been discouraged from using the service due to the high cost of the tax.

We believe that mobile money has greatly accelerated financial inclusion by overcoming access to money barriers. It also further promotes business, trade and commerce especially within the informal sectors of the economy and rural, hard to reach parts of Uganda which have no access to formal financial services.

MTN Mbarara run attracts 1,500 amidst heavy showers

• The MTN Mbarara Run was the third and last regional run ahead of the MTN Kampala Marathon
• Over 1,500 participants had registered for the run by Friday 16th November, 2018
• KCCA had the strongest outing, grabbing 3 out of 12 podium positions available
• Prisons and Police both took 2 out of 12 podium positions available

Mbarara: This Sunday morning, thousands of Mbarara residents braved mist, cold and rain showers to take part in the third and last regional run ahead of the much anticipated 15th edition of the MTN Marathon.

In the end Salimo David from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) took the top honours in the men’s 10km run while Ajok Dorcus from Uganda Prisons Athletics Club took top position in the women’s 10km run. It was third time lucky for Salimo David who took part in the MTN Gulu and MTN Mbale runs but finished 5th and 6th respectively.

“I want to take part in either the 10km or 21km run next week at the MTN Kampala Marathon next Sunday” said Salimo David who was buoyed by his win and impressed with his resilience after taking part in three runs in a space of 21 days.

Wardress Ajok Dorcus who was in April this year promoted to Assistant Matron by the Commissioner General of Prisons for having represented Uganda at the Common Wealth Games in Australia 2018 also impressed at the MTN Mbarara run as she warded off stiff competition from Cheptegei Rebecca of UPDF and Achiru Nite of Ndejje.

Ugandan middle distance runner Dorcas Ajok is not new in the country’s athletics history as she notably took part in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Uganda last year. She is well known in the track events and won gold at the 2016 All Africa University Games held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“I came here to look for long distance endurance experience as I prepare for the runs next year” she said. She also confirmed, like Salimo David, that she will take part in the 10km MTN Kampala Marathon that will take place on Sunday 25th November, 2018.

KCCA turned double victors in both the men and women’s 5km run as Chelimo Calvin and Cheko Moi took top honours. Sunday Sarius and Chemutai Vincent from Uganda Police took second and third places in the men’s 5km run while Chelangat Rebecca from Prisons and Chebet Aisha from Arua finished in similar place in the women’s 5km run.

It has been a good outing for the Uganda Police Athletics club who also finished strong in last week’s Gulu Run. Kassim Latigo, a renowned Senior Fitness Instructor from Lakes Gym and Spa took the runners through a warm up session from 6.30am at the MTN Mbarara Run which was attended by a mix of running enthusiasts, family and friends.

On a weekend that saw celebrated sports journalist Andrew Kabuura get introduced to media personality Flavia Tumusiime, many had hoped that a local runner from Mbarara would put icing on the cake by taking a podium position but it was unfortunately not to be as local runners were swept away thanks to stiff competition thanks to visiting runners who came from other regions of Uganda.

Jose Chameleone and King Saha provided the much needed entertainment after a warm down session and prize giving ceremony. At the run, MTN Marathon partners and sponsors Coca-Cola Beverages Africa, Stanbic Bank, Huawei Uganda, Vision Group and SPEDAG were present courtesy of their regional executives and representatives.

NSSF announces new payment plan to allow partial payments for eligible members

NSSF Head of Marketing and Communications, Barbra Arimi and Patrick Ayota, NSSF Deputy Managing Director addressing the press

NSSF Head of Marketing and Communications, Barbra Arimi(L) and NSSF Deputy Managing Director, Patrick Ayota addressing the press.

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has announced a benefits payment plan that will allow qualifying members to retain part of their savings with the Fund at the point of exit to avoid depletion of their life savings within a short period.

The innovation, dubbed NSSF Draw Down Payment Plan, will be eligible to members who qualify for Age Benefit and Withdrawal Benefit.

According to the NSSF Act, Age Benefit is paid to a member of the Fund “if he or she attains the age of fifty years and has retired from regular employment; or if he or she attains the age of fifty-five years”.

Withdrawal Benefit is paid to a member of the Fund “if he or she attains the age of fifty years; and if he or she has not been employed under a contract of service for a period of one year immediately preceding his or her claim”.

Withdrawal Benefit is also paid to “any person who ceases to be a member of the fund by virtue of being employed in excepted employment”.

Speaking to media at the launch of the plan at Workers House, Patrick Ayota the Fund’s Deputy Managing Director said the plan will enable qualifying members utilise their NSSF savings slowly as they work through a retirement plan/investment that works for them.

“We have received several requests from qualifying members to pay them a portion of their savings and pay them the balance in installments as they finalize their investment plans for the large sums saved.” Ayota said.

“It helps to extend income security during retirement because a member can decide how much they wish to retain in their NSSF account and when they wish to claim it all. This will enable our members avoid the risk of burning out life’s savings upon payment of a lump sum at a go by cushioning against losses, which may arise out of making rushed investment decisions,” he added.

The Draw Down Payment Plan was informed by a survey conducted amongst 45- 60 year old members where 62% said they would consider the payment of their benefits in installments rather than receiving them in a lump sum.

According to an earlier internal survey by the Fund, more than 70% of the beneficiaries had depleted their savings received from the Fund within two years, and most wished they had had an opportunity to receive their savings in installments.

Members also will have an opportunity to maintain a cash flow pattern that they may have been familiar with while still in employment.

Ayota also said that members that enroll for the plan would continue to receive annual interest on their balances retained by the Fund in line with the interest that will be declared by the responsible minister in a given Financial Year.

MTN Marathon

The change in the route of the 21kms half marathon and 42kms marathon for the MTN Kampala Marathon is predicted to improve the time put up by elite runners. According to the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), the new routes have reduced hills and also avoided high traffic areas that often play a role in the times put up by the athletes. The 15th edition of the MTN Kampala Marathon takes place this Sunday, 25th November 2018 starting at the Kololo Airstrip.

“We have ensured that the new route has fewer hills and with that, we expect to see some improved times put up during the MTN Kampala Marathon. Several athletes did come to us and explain that the route had many hills. We have listened to them and reduced the hills so now the expectation is improved time,” explains Faustino Kiwa, the Organising Secretary at UAF.

In the previous editions of the MTN Kampala Marathon, athletes have also had to go as far as Bwaise and the Northern Bypass. This has posed several logistical challenges for the organisers. This is in terms of security and ensuring that the traffic flow is managed for athletes to have a good running experience.

“For the 42kms runners, we are going to have a circuit. There is a section of 16.5kilometeres that the athletes will have to run twice. That is what we’ve called the circuit. For spectators, it is also an opportunity to see some of the runners twice since they’ll be going around part of the route twice,” Kiwa adds.

In 2017, the winner in the Men’s category Sammy Kip-Ngetich Kurgat from Kenya of the 42kms marathon completed it in 2hours 19 minutes and 5 seconds whereas Kimaiyo Rael Jepyator from Kenya won the Women’s category in 1 hour 58 minutes and 14 seconds.

Kiwa also noted that there will be a 20 minute split in the start time, with the 42kms runners flagged off first, followed by the 21kms runners.

For the 10kms runners, the route remains the same. According to MTN Uganda, the proceeds for the MTN Kampala Marathon are going to support the improvement of maternal health.

Kit collection and physical registration are also ongoing at MTN Headquarters at the former BAT building, Stanbic Garden City, William Street, MTN Service Centres along Kampala Road, Lugogo Mall, Clock Tower, Forest Mall, and Victoria Mall in Entebbe. Physical registration will cost Shs25,000 per kit and will be ongoing until 23rd November 2018.
