dfcu CEO Mathias Katamba hands over cheque for Rotary Blood Bank Mengo.

By Our Reporter

dfcu Bank has announced a contribution of UGX 15,000,000 as one of the sponsors of the upcoming Transformational Leadership Forum and the Kirk Wallum Jazz concert slated for 7th March 2019. The contribution is towards fundraising efforts for the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital which was constructed by Rotary and its partners.

The announcement was at dfcu Bank’s head office in Kampala where the Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Mathias Katamba, handed over a cheque to Dr. Emmanuel Katongole, Chairperson Rotary Blood Bank Program.

The initiative intends to raise $500,000 in order to equip Mengo Hospital with a fully-fledged Blood Bank which can test, process and pack safe blood before being distributed to other health centres.

According to dfcu CEO, Mathias Katamba, “It is unfortunate that, patients still die or suffer unnecessarily because they do not have access to safe blood transfusion. The timely availability of safe blood and blood products is essential in all health facilities. It is possible to bridge the gap, between blood requirements and annual shortfall of 100,000 units of blood in Uganda, if each one of us gets involved in initiatives such as these.”

“Our support towards this cause is directly in line with our brand promise of Making More Possible for the diverse communities in which we operate. People are at the heart of our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) agenda and the need for accessible safe blood is universal, so we are more than glad to make our contribution to this cause. We will be unveiling more community investment initiatives this year as dfcu celebrates 55 years of existence,” Katamba added.

“We are happy to have dfcu partner with us on a cause that will enable the Rotary Club make a significant contribution in meeting the annual deficit of 100,000 units of blood. Our target for this year is to equip the Mengo blood bank so that-it is a fully fledged facility which can test, process and pack safe blood. The contribution from dfcu towards our fundraising efforts is commendable,” said Emanuel Katongole.

dfcu Bank has a history with Rotary and has been a part of several fundraising initiatives including the Rotary Hospital in Mukono where dfcu made a contribution of UGX 150M towards its construction.

The delegation from India and local tour guides pose for a photo during Gorilla tracking in Bwindi

By Our Reporter

Having successfully completed an eight-day tour of Uganda, a delegation from India comprising Bollywood stars and members of Travel Agents of India (TAFI) has today, Monday March 4, 2019 flown out, full of praise for the country’s rich and numerous attractions.

The group, led by Bharat Dabholkar, a distinguished film director, actor, writer and advertising guru, arrived in the country on Wednesday February 28, 2019 and almost immediately flew out to Kidepo National Park.

The team started off with a game drive and sight-seeing, giving them just a glimpse of the diverse wildlife in Uganda before proceeding to meet the Karimojong in their indigenous homesteads, the Manyatta. The team also went gorilla tracking at Bwindi, visited Queen Elizabeth National Park and also enjoyed a boat ride on the Kazinga Channel, among other activities.
As they concluded their Ugandan visit, the team met President Yoweri Museveni yesterday at State House Nakasero where they discussed several issues.

The President urged them to encourage more tourists from India to come and experience the beauty of Uganda. He also said that linkages between India and Uganda have the potential to boost trade and investment.

Dabholkar, who has directed and starred in over 17 Bollywood films promised the President that they would promote Uganda as a tourist destination for Indians and also as a location for filmng Bollywood movies where Ugandans will participate.

He also stated that they will bring big film tourists to Uganda saying that film tourism will be a big deal.

Asked how his Uganda visit was, Dabholkar couldn’t hide his excitement, saying he would gladly jump onto another opportunity to visit Uganda.
“We came to Uganda to also experience the numerous stories we had been told about this place (Uganda) and to be honest, this is an extremely beautiful country. There’s a lot for one to take in here and I think I would need another trip to experience more of this,” he said.

Dabholkar was particularly excited about the Gorilla tracking experience and the Manyatta cultural attributes. He noted, “Niche tourism with special package like the Gorilla tracking is very easy to sell and for our team this is a take home package for all.”

Other members of the delegation included; Shobanadri Yarlagadda, lead producer of Baahubali, a famous trilogy in Bollywood cinema, accompanied by his spouse Lakshmi Yarlagadda and Prasad Devinemi who helped co-producer the same film.

Others were Bharat Shah, Chairman of TAFI, Pradeep Lulla, Vice President of TAFI, Aditi Bhende, National General Secretary of TAFI and Ramji Natarajan, Chairman of Travel Masters India Corporation.

Also in the team was Veena Patel Sandeed, owner of Veena Travel, a Mumbai-based Indian tour company specializing in budget travel packages, Karad Anand, Head of Relationships and Supplier Management of Cox and Kings, a famous global travel agency with an Indian base.

Sumit Chaturvedi, an Executive Producer at India’s World Is One News (WION) global channel who was part of the delegation disclosed that most of the footage attained from the visit will be featured in a televised program offering, which will be free advertising for Uganda tourism industry.

Grace Akello, the Uganda High Commissioner to India, while welcoming the delegation to Uganda, stated that the visit aimed at unmasking Uganda’s tourism potential, opening up the space for newer opportunities and for the film stars onboard to spot out potential sites for possible film shoots. “This visit paves way for the possibility of local film makers working with this world-class film giant in southern Asia, to promote Uganda,” Akello said.

Uganda has in recent years become a haven for the production of internationally acclaimed movies. Hollywood blockbusters such as Queen of Katwe, The last King of Scotland, Victory at Entebbe, 7 Days in Entebbe, Mississipi Masala starring Denzel Washington, are some of the movies to have featured Uganda.

Adding Bollywood onto that portfolio would be a huge steal given the global appeal this burgeoning Asian movie industry has gained.

The team’s visit was as a result of cooperation between Uganda’s Mission in New Delhi with government tourism agencies; Uganda Tourism Board and Uganda Wild Life Authority; as well as the private sector.

“I will help her and her sick child, but Ugandan girls need to get out of this country and work. You need to go out there and make ends meet. You cannot end up like thieves and even get killed,” Black added.

Ugandan maestro singer Bebe Cool over the weekend attended the universal health coverage conference at the Kigali convention centre in Rwanda and talked to young people all over Africa. Considering the singet is Ambassador for Tuberclosis, he was best candidate to discuss health issues. The singer after he conference had the following remarks “Today, I was honoured to interact with over 400 youth from 25 countries all over Africa and the world at the launch of the Youth for Universal Health Coverage Conference at the Kigali Convention Centre in Rwanda. These young people have been deliberating for days with an aim of finding solutions to health care access for all youth in Africa. I am happy that for the first time, African youth have been given an opportunity to identify their own challenges and to also participate in finding practical solutions through their talents, connections and passion. These youth under a theme “Nothing about us, without us”, asked that they be included in decision making processes that impact their livelihood. I challenged them to question their motives for demanding a sit on the table of MEN. Are they coming with practical solutions or joining with an attitude of entitlement. I advised them to desist from making impractical demands but to concentrate on identifying challenges and suggesting realistic solutions. On the same day, I was privileged to have interacted with some of the most influential people in the noble business of health care. In meetings with me was the Senior disease coordinator of the Global Fund Dr Eliud Wandwalo, the head of community rights and gender at the Global Fund Ms Kate Thomson, the Group CEO of Amref Health Africa Dr Githinji Gitahi, the Rwanda Minister of Health Dr Diane Gashumba, the Liberia deputy Minister of Health Ms Norwu Howard, Uganda’s National TB and Leprosy Commisioner Dr Stavia, Mr Jacob Creswell, the team lead Stop TB partnership and Thandi Katlholo also of Stop TB partnership, and many other distinguished dignitaries.
