Mad Rat and Chiko in the Jazz laftaz comedy show

Comedy duo Mad Rat and Chiko doing their thing.

By Our Reporter

After their successful show early last year, the dynamic comedy duo of Madrat & Chiko –real names Dickson Lubega and Frank Mubiru– have been on a roll, with their comedy acts and shows growing by the number.

And by the time next week starts, the profile of the ever-improving duo will have risen a notch higher, for the comic pair is set to headline performances at the prestigious Singleton challenge slated to take place at Entebbe Golf Club this Saturday.

The duo will be the lead entertainers for golfers and guests at the exclusive 19th Hole Experience at the Entebbe Club –and you can be sure that after the golfers are done with Round two of the challenge on the greens, they will have to laugh their stomachs out.

Madrat and Chiko will not be the only comedians in the house; they will be performing alongside famed President Museveni imitator Teacher Mpamiire, as well as the event’s host Patrick Salvado Idringi.

When asked about how they are able to communicate at corporate events, given they came through the ranks as a primarily downtown comedy outfit, the duo were candid in their inevitably funny way: “There is a saying that ‘desperate situations call for desperate measures.’ We didn’t complete school and truth be told, our English is not the best, but we will speak it when we have to. At most corporate events, we are pushed to the wall, but at the end of the day we come out of it and smile all the way to the bank. People should expect the best”.

The grand prize for the winning pair of this year’s Singleton Challenge is a fully-paid golfing trip to watch the OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic, a series which has featured some of golf’s best players, including Tiger Woods and Henrik Stenson.

Sheebah in Enjala video

By Our Reporter

Last week, Ugandan music sensation Queen Sheebah, had a flashback Friday when she stepped into a downtown dance studio for teens, joined by Tanzanian heartthrob Harmonize before they recorded their Coke Studio Africa duet.

Best known for multiple hits such as Weekend, Wankona, Farmer and Binkolera as well as her role as Shakira alongside Lupita Nyong’o in Queen Of Katwe, Sheebah started her career at 15 as a dancer in a group called Stingers before she left the group for Obsessions Music Group in 2006.

“I was just like you. I also had a dance crew, we had a place like this. Walking in here I got that same feeling I had when I got a spot in my first dance school. People may say ‘Oh you are just a dancer and blah blah blah blah, but no you are not just a dancer, your dreams are valid!” she said during her emotional pep talk.

As part of the episode, Harmonize, clad in a pink suit, performs Mummy Yo – one of sheebah’s hit songs while Sheebah performs his ‘Atarudi’ track in Luganda.

For their original composition, the two work with Nigerian producer Gospel on the Beatz to create an amazing track titled ‘Follow Me’.

When Sheila Gashumba went on baecation with her new man, God’s Plan,
at the beginning of the year, it was clear then to her fans and everyone that cared, that the TV presenter’s relationship with hot rapper Fik Famecia had ended. Sheila got even closer to her new man when she came back to Uganda dusting off every bad word that was said against him.

In a new instant hit song called Tobiloberamu, Fik Fameica has lashed back at Sheila Gashumba giving out his reasons why he left the pencil thin socialite. In the song, Fik said that Sheila took things for granted and that he can never give her another chance.

According to Fik, Sheila tried to get back with him but it was too late for her as he had moved on and now focuses on making money and taking his music career to the next level.

Word has it that Sheila Gashumba’s father was against her relationship with the rapper when they had just began. This was partly the reason she left him. Once she got rid of her father poking his nose in her every business in a bitter dad -daughter fight that rocked Social Media, Sheila decided to go with a richer and mature God’s plan. Months later, Fik says she wanted him back and he gave her a cold shoulder.

Listen to the new jam here.

We will keep you posted.

Head Tender Sales MAC East Africa Ltd, Kawalya Douglas, dfcu Bank Asset Finance Manager Ronald Ssonko, and Head of Business Developmetn ICEA Daniel Kairu unveiling the offer at Isuzu showroom.

By Our Reporter

dfcu Bank in partnership with MAC East Africa Limited and ICEA (Insurance Company of East Africa) have launched an Asset financing campaign that will see customers purchase the latest Isuzu mu-X 2018 at a special offer price. The current market price for the luxury SUV is $60,000 but for a period of 3 months, with dfcu’s asset financing campaign, customers will own it at a 5% discounted rate. This offer will make it possible for customers to make payments in instalments.

According to Ronald Ssonko, dfcu Bank’s Asset Finance Manager, one can pay $999 monthly and along with comprehensive insurance and motor service for 12 months from ICEA. Affordable acquisition of the Isuzu mu-X is supported by attractive terms of payment available through non-collateral or security deposit Asset Financing with dfcu Bank.

“dfcu asset financing provides a medium-term option for acquiring the Isuzu mu-X. A contract is drawn between dfcu and the customer, the Bank provides the vehicle in return for specified repayments at an agreed interest rate. At the end of the period and after complying with all the contract terms, ownership of the vehicle is fully assigned to the customer. Asset finance is based on the notion that business cash flows are generated from the use of the asset, ” he adds.

Isuzu mu-X is designed and built with the Isuzu tradition of good quality, reliability, affordability and tough utility purpose. Beneath the trendy look, comfortable cabin and modern amenities is a tough off-road 4WD with improved aerodynamics, road handling and safety-enhancing electronics powered by a more fuel efficient and better-performing engine.

“The Isuzu mu-X is a celebration of modern Isuzu styling and design blended with the Isuzu tradition of reliability, trust and muscular toughness. The sharp cascading edges and contours give the mu-X a muscular bold look and aero dynamism which also complements the contemporary looks, giving it fuel efficiency and excellent handling on all terrain in Uganda,” said Kawalya Douglas, Head Tender Sales, MAC East Africa Ltd.

According to Daniel Kairu, Head of Business Devlopment and Marketing at ICEA General Inusrance Uganda Ltd, most people think of motor insurance in terms of third party insurance; something akin to graduated tax for cars-some punishment for choosing to drive while others are walking. The motor third party benefit of UGX 1M is nothing to write home about.

“Over and above the statutory insurance, motorists need to think about how much they actually spend on their cars. Every scratch, every dent, every knock, is paid for out-of-pocket (and never planned for). A comprehensive cover will pay for damage to your vehicle, damage to the other vehicles involved in the accident, injury or death caused to third parties, damage to third party property, 24 hour rescue services coupled with accident scene management for your car amongst others and all for a one-off premium,” Daniel Kairu added.

Did Usain Bolt inspire Taxify’s new name?

KTaxify, the leading European on-demand transportation platform, is changing its name to Bolt and introducing a new logo. The update brings the brand identity in line with the company’s broader vision of transportation that has already expanded from ride-hailing, with cars and motorbikes, to scooter sharing.

Speaking on why the company chose to make the change, Markus Villig, CEO and co-founder, Bolt said, “Taxify launched five years ago with a mission to make urban transportation more convenient and affordable. Our first product was a taxi dispatch solution that gave the company its original name.”

The Estonian-born tech company has evolved in leaps and bounds since its inception to now serve 25 million customers in over 30 countries globally, making it a leader in Europe and Africa. It was also the first company to bring ride-hailing and scooter sharing together in one single app and is currently working on expanding the scooter sharing service across a number of European cities.

“While we’ve made progress on our mission, we’ve also started to outgrow parts of our brand, including the name. Given our ambition to solve transportation problems on an increasingly broader scale, we want the brand to reflect the company’s future rather than the past. Our new name ‘Bolt’ stands for fast, effortless movement – exactly what the experience of getting around in a city should be, be it by car, scooter or public transport. It also underscores our belief that the future of transportation will be electric”, Country Manager for Uganda at Bolt, Julian Byamugisha, explained.

The new brand will be gradually rolled out across Bolt’s global markets over the following weeks. Bolt users will not need to take any action as the app will update automatically.

Leaves us wondering if Usain Bolt, the Jamaican retired sprinter inspired the new name given his speed when he was still doing active sports.

Huawei Sues the U.S. Government for Unconstitutional Sales Restrictions Imposed by Congress

$

By Staff Writer

[Shenzhen, China, March 7, 2019] Today, Huawei announced that it has filed a complaint in a U.S. federal court that challenges the constitutionality of Section 889 of the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Through this action, Huawei seeks a declaratory judgment that the restrictions targeting Huawei are unconstitutional, and a permanent injunction against these restrictions.

“The U.S. Congress has repeatedly failed to produce any evidence to support its restrictions on Huawei products. We are compelled to take this legal action as a proper and last resort,” Guo Ping, Huawei Rotating Chairman said. “This ban not only is unlawful, but also restricts Huawei from engaging in fair competition, ultimately harming U.S. consumers. We look forward to the court’s verdict, and trust that it will benefit both Huawei and the American people.”

The lawsuit was filed in a U.S. District Court in Plano, Texas. According to the complaint, Section 889 of the 2019 NDAA not only bars all U.S. Government agencies from buying Huawei equipment and services, but also bars them from contracting with or awarding grants or loans to third parties who buy Huawei equipment or services, without any executive or judicial process. This violates the Bill of Attainder Clause and the Due Process Clause. It also violates the Separation-of-Powers principles enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, because Congress is both making the law, and attempting to adjudicate and execute it.

Song Liuping, Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer, stressed, “Section 889 is based on numerous false, unproven, and untested propositions. Contrary to the statute’s premise, Huawei is not owned, controlled, or influenced by the Chinese government. Moreover, Huawei has an excellent security record and program. No contrary evidence has been offered.”

“At Huawei we are proud that we are the most open, transparent, and scrutinized company in the world,” said John Suffolk, Huawei’s Global Cyber Security & Privacy Officer. “Huawei’s approach to security by design development and deployment sets a high standards bar that few can match.”

From Huawei’s perspective, the NDAA restrictions prevent the company from providing more advanced 5G technologies to U.S. consumers, which will delay the commercial application of 5G, in turn, impeding efforts to improve the performance of 5G networks in the U.S. Beyond this, network users in rural and remote regions of the U.S. will be forced to choose between government funding and high-quality, cost-effective products. This will impede the network upgrade process, thus widening the digital divide. Even worse, the restrictions on Huawei will stifle competition, leaving U.S. consumers paying higher prices for inferior products.

Estimates from industry sources show that allowing Huawei to compete would reduce the cost of wireless infrastructure by between 15% and 40%. This would save North America at least US$20 billion over the next four years.

Guo Ping added, “If this law is set aside, as it should be, Huawei can bring more advanced technologies to the United States and help it build the best 5G networks. Huawei is willing to address the U.S. Government’s security concerns. Lifting the NDAA ban will give the U.S. Government the flexibility it needs to work with Huawei and solve real security issues.”
